How to handle challenging workplace conversations webinar
Aspiring, a provider of HR solutions and leadership and development coaching, is hosting a webinar to provide expert guidance on effectively navigating challenging conversations in the workplace.
A study conducted by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)*, found that the most challenging conversations individuals in the UK face occur within the workplace, with personal topics such as sex and money ranking lower on the difficulty scale.
The research, based on a survey of 2,000 people, highlights the top four work-related scenarios that pose significant communication challenges. A total of 33% of respondents find discussing pay packets challenging, while 31% struggle with addressing inappropriate behaviour in the workplace, 30% with providing feedback on poor performance, and 23% with discussing promotions.
With half of the respondents reporting the need to engage in such dialogues at least once a month, it is evident that navigating these conversations is a recurring aspect of professional life. Despite this frequency, individuals often struggle with initiating and managing these discussions effectively.
Amanda Menahem, Client HR Director at Aspiring, commented:
"Difficult conversations are uncomfortable because they often involve confronting sensitive issues or delivering unwelcome news, but they are an inevitable aspect of professional life, yet many of us feel ill-equipped to handle these conversations effectively.
"Our tendency can be to avoid confrontation so it's essential for managers and leaders to develop the skills and confidence needed to navigate difficult discussions."
To assist professionals in overcoming communication hurdles, Aspiring offers practical advice for approaching challenging conversations:
Awareness: Recognise the tendency to avoid confrontation and understand when issues need to be addressed.
Preparation: Thoroughly prepare for the conversation, get into the right mindset and establish desired outcomes.
Planning: Follow a structured approach to the conversation and mentally rehearse.
Amanda Menahem added:
"By understanding the dynamics of what can go wrong, avoiding the pitfalls and adopting some simple techniques we can all navigate difficult conversations and achieve positive outcomes. Through the webinar we are aiming to equip professionals with the necessary tools and strategies to hold difficult conversations with confidence and professionalism."
The webinar will be led by Amanda Menahem and Liz Beck, Founder and CEO of Aspiring. The webinar will provide attendees with practical guidance and the opportunity for coaching on specific scenarios.
The 'Challenging Conversations webinar takes place on Wednesday 24th April from 10am. People can register via this link - https://bit.ly/3Js4MlW.
