Lynchburg Scam Jam - May 7 - Fort Early Artillery Redoubt
To empower people 50 and older to protect themselves against fraud, AARP Virginia is bringing together law enforcement and other local officials for a free community Scam Jam event from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 at Fort Early Artillery Redoubt, 3511 Memorial Avenue, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
Attendees will learn the red flags to spot scams and protect themselves and their families from scammers’ tactics, the steps to report fraud that helps warn others and more. Speakers will give pointers on how to detect Medicare fraud, how to create safe passwords and the Virginia Department of Treasury will be on hand to help participants find unclaimed property.
The keynote speaker will be Matt Hall, community liaison officer at the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia. Lynchburg Mayor Stephanie Reed, Senator Mark Peake and Delegate Wendell Walker will offer opening remarks. Shawn Smith, state director of the Senior Medicare Patrol and Sarah Thacker, director of community impact for the Central Virginia Alliance for Community Living will help attendees understand how to recognize Medicare fraud.
