Training Course on Shelter &Settlement planning
Introduction Shelter & settlement planning in emergencies helps you understand strategies and practices that are intrinsic to the shelter sector and humanitarian sector in general. The training aims to improve the effectiveness of specialist and non – specialist in emergency response. This training aims to equip participants with the skills required to design a shelter and settlements response in a humanitarian crisis after natural disasters. It will provide participants with an overview of shelter and settlements in emergencies, their relevance in humanitarian programmes and an understanding of the principles and practice of humanitarian shelter response. Duration 5 days. Target audience The training will target Individuals working in the humanitarian and shelter sectors for the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, United Nations agencies or Non-Governmental Organizations, or Governments, particularly agencies or institutions actively involved in the delivery of humanitarian assistance through shelter and settlements responses at global or country level. Course Objectives By the end of training the participant should be able to: i. Understand the range of possible impacts of settlement and shelter upon local, national and regional security ii. Be in position to understand the range of transitional settlement options available for support iii. Understand the mechanisms and phases of coordination and response Course Content a. The Humanitarian Reform, the cluster approach and the shelter cluster b. IFRC mechanisms for emergency response c. IFRC Emergency finance tools: DREFT and appeals (PEA, EA, REA) d. Principles of shelter after disaster (emergency and recovery) e. Difference between relief and recovery, how shelter programmes bridge them f. Settlements options for displaced and non-displaced population before and after a disaster g. Needs/damages/capacities assessments for shelter and settlements programmes h. Implementation emergency shelter response: logistic, relief/distribution and technical support i. Shelter and settlements programming aspects related with settlements options, site planning, living space, design, construction and environment (shelter chapter, Sphere standards) j. Planning shelter response: drafting a plan of action, targeting and selection of beneficiaries, monitoring and evaluation of the programme Methodology The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web-based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields. Key Notes i. The participant must be conversant with English. ii. Upon completion of training the participant will be issued with an Authorized Training Certificate iii. Course duration is flexible and the contents can be modified to fit any number of days. iv. The course fee includes facilitation training materials, 2 coffee breaks, buffet lunch and a Certificate upon successful completion of Training. v. One-year post-training support Consultation and Coaching provided after the course. vi. Payment should be done at least a week before commence of the training, to DATASTAT CONSULTANCY LTD account, as indicated in the invoice so as to enable us prepare better for you.
